What is the difference between watch oil and grease?

Watch oil has a liquid consistency and is primarily used in points where elements perform fast or precise movements, such as at wheel pivots and bearings.

Watch grease has a thicker consistency and adheres better to larger friction surfaces. It is used, among other things, for springs, drum walls, the winding mechanism, and elements working under greater pressure.

The choice of lubricant cannot be made solely based on its consistency. Viscosity, pressure resistance, stability, and the intended use specified by the manufacturer are also important.

What oil is suitable for fast-moving pivots?

Fast-moving elements with low torque require oil with appropriately low viscosity. The lubricant must reach the surfaces of the interacting parts but should not excessively spread beyond the lubrication point.

Light oils intended for precision mechanisms are used for such applications. The choice of a specific product depends, among other things, on the size of the mechanism, load, and operating temperature.

What lubricant is used for the escapement?

The escapement operates under specific conditions. Anchor pallets and the teeth of the escapement wheel make fast, repetitive contacts on a very small surface.

The lubricant for the escapement should stay well in the application area and limit the wear of the interacting surfaces. The same oil used for all pivots of the gear train should not be automatically applied here.

What grease is used for the spring and drum?

The mainspring and the interior of the drum work on larger surfaces than the wheel pivots. Here, a medium with higher adhesion is needed that will not quickly run off the surface.

However, it is necessary to distinguish:

  • lubrication of the spring itself,
  • lubrication of slowly moving surfaces,
  • lubrication of the drum wall requiring controlled slip.

Not every spring grease is suitable for the walls of an automatic drum. Brake lubricants should allow the proper sliding of the end of the spring once the appropriate tension is reached.

What grease is used for the winding mechanism?

The tensioning elements, setting hands, and switching functions may work under greater pressure than the gear wheels of the movement.

In such points, greases that adhere well to surfaces and are resistant to displacement are used. The lubricant should be applied only in the places indicated in the mechanism's documentation.

  • get onto wheels or springs,
  • bind dust and dirt,
  • increase the resistance of the mechanism,
  • worsen the stability of operation.

Can the mechanism be lubricated without prior cleaning?

A new lubricant should not be applied over an old, dirty, or dried medium. Residues of old oil may contain dust, wear products, and contaminants that increase friction.

Before lubrication, the mechanism should be disassembled, properly cleaned, rinsed, and dried. Only then can the appropriate products be applied according to the technical documentation.

How to store watch oils and greases?

Products should be stored:

  • in their original and tightly sealed packaging,
  • in a clean and dry place,
  • away from direct light,
  • without exposure to extreme temperatures,
  • in a way that protects them from dust and contamination.

Dirty tools should not be used to scoop oil. Contaminating the entire package can change the properties of the product.
