MT920 battery – differences between Citizen and Seiko versions

2026-07-31

MT920 is the designation for a cell found in many Citizen and Seiko watches. However, it does not denote a single universal part. Different versions may have different contact plates, manufacturer numbers, and are intended for specific calibers. We explain how to properly select the MT920 battery.

The battery marked as MT920 is found in many solar and kinetic watches. However, the cell symbol alone is not sufficient for proper part selection.

In practice, you can find many complete batteries using the MT920 cell, but differing in contact plates, construction, part number, and compatibility with mechanisms.

Is every MT920 battery the same?

No. The MT920 designation specifies the type of cell, but does not always identify the complete part intended for a specific watch.

For example, in Seiko watches, you can find various versions from the 3023 family, such as 3023.24D, 3023.24L, 3023.24M, 3023.24R, or 3023.24X. All may be related to the MT920 cell, but are intended for different calibers.

How to choose the right MT920?

When selecting a battery, it is best to check:

  • the caliber of the watch mechanism,
  • the manufacturer's part number,
  • the designation of the old battery,
  • the layout and shape of the contact plates.

You should not select a battery solely based on diameter or the MT920 designation.

MT920 and TC920 – do they mean the same battery?

In the descriptions of some Seiko parts, comparative designations MT920 and TC920 appear. However, you should not assume that every part marked MT920 or TC920 is directly interchangeable.

When selecting, the full part number and compatibility with the mechanism caliber remain the most important.

Why is the plate on the battery important?

The battery installed in the watch must have the appropriate electrical connection with the mechanism. Therefore, complete parts may have different shapes and arrangements of contact plates.

Two batteries with the same MT920 cell may look similar but be intended for completely different mechanisms.

Can you transfer a plate from one MT920 to another?

This modification should not be treated as a standard method for selecting parts. The best solution is to use a complete battery intended for a given caliber.

Which MT920 should you buy?

If you know the caliber of the mechanism, search for it in the compatibility table for Citizen or Seiko. If you only know the MT920 symbol, also check the watch designation, mechanism number, and the appearance of the old battery before purchasing.

In case of doubts, it is advisable to take the watch to a watchmaker's point, where the correct part can be selected after identifying the mechanism.
