Seiko Kinetic and Solar batteries – selecting a battery for the caliber

Watches Seiko Kinetic and selected Seiko solar watches use batteries designed for specific mechanisms. In many cases, the designation of the cell, such as MT920, MT621, or MT516, does not yet allow for the correct part to be selected.

Batteries may have the same base cell but differ in the arrangement of contact plates and the Seiko part number. Therefore, when replacing, it is best to check the caliber of the mechanism and the designation of the old battery.

How to choose a battery for a Seiko watch?

The most important information is the designation of the caliber of the mechanism. For example, calibers 5M, 7D, V17, or 7B may require different versions of the battery despite using a cell from the same family.

Important: do not select a battery solely based on diameter, voltage, or the symbol MT920. It is safest to compare the part number and the list of compatible calibers.

Are all MT920 batteries the same?

No. This is one of the most important issues when selecting a battery for Seiko. The symbol MT920 may indicate the type of cell used, but complete Seiko parts from the 3023 family may differ in contact plates and purpose.

For example, batteries 3023.24D, 3023.24L, 3023.24M, 3023.24R, and 3023.24X are intended for different families of calibers, even though their designations may include MT920.

MT516, MT621, and MT920 – what to look for on the old battery?

If the removed battery is available, it is worth checking both the symbol of the cell itself and the shape and arrangement of the contact plates. An even better way is to determine the caliber of the mechanism and match the part based on the Seiko number, e.g., 3027.26T, 3026.24X, or 3023.24R.
